Less than 5 percent vaccinated
The study, A Dose of Reality, examines commitments made by pharmaceutical companies and world leaders since the start of the pandemic. It turns out that since the start of the pandemic, only 0.7 percent of all vaccine doses produced have gone to low-income countries, the report said.
Partly due to the backlog of deliveries, poor countries have fallen behind in vaccination. In Africa, for example, only 2.6 percent of the entire population has been fully vaccinated, compared to, for example, well over 80 percent in the Netherlands.
The researchers call on world leaders to make the corona vaccines available worldwide at cost. “It’s time to leave the path of broken promises and protecting the profits of a small group and set course for the fastest way out of the pandemic,” they write in the report.
