Since it was launched in 2018, Oxenfree garnered praise and became one of those indies that earns the absolute affection of a small legion of players. With beautiful graphics, an engaging story focused on its characters and rich dialogues, the narrative game developed by Night School Studio will soon get a sequel, and the Game On had the opportunity to check out a quick demonstration during the Tribeca Games Showcase.
Em Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, the player takes on the role of Riley, a researcher who is investigating strange radio signals in the coastal town of Camena. As expected, things don’t go so well, a mysterious portal opens and the only way to close it is to direct a coordinated signal to the island using three transmitters. Riley travels alongside Jacob, a co-worker and old acquaintance who accompanies her along a path that won’t be as easy as expected.
Although they are new characters, the duo maintains the dynamics that worked perfectly in the previous game, and the player basically needs to walk and talk – in addition to other small actions that cause some anguish and enrich the narrative.
A strong point of the franchise, the dialogues always have interesting choices and work organically and always in a very good mood. Oxenfree maintains the characteristic of being a narrative with simple gameplay, and this simplicity allows Night School Studio, now owned by Netflix, to create a new story that promises to be exciting and deep again.
You can see that the essence of the first game is still there, but Oxenfree II: Lost Signal feels more mature in relation to it. This is clear during the demo: the developers know where they’re stepping and are taking advantage of everything they’ve built and worked before – it remains to be seen what they will bring new. Written by Adam Hines, the game takes place five years after Oxenfree and will have a direct connection to its predecessor, which will only be discovered in the future.
Oxenfree II: Lost Signals arrives in 2022 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Switch.
