Owners of damaged homes in Groningen withdraw damage claim against NAM | NOW

Homeowners in the earthquake area in Groningen decided on Wednesday evening to stop the legal proceedings that they had initiated against the NAM via Stichting Waarde Minder door Aardbevingen Groningen (WAG), reports RTV North.

The foundation started the matter in 2015 on behalf of many hundreds of private individuals and twelve housing associations and demanded that NAM compensate them for the decrease in value of their properties due to earthquake damage.

At its peak, more than 5,000 homeowners took part in the mass claim. According to the broadcaster, the WAG Foundation now has 1340 members. The decision to withdraw the claim was taken on Wednesday evening during the annual meeting of the foundation.

Several homeowners confirm opposite RTV North that NAM pays 1.8 million euros to the WAG foundation. With that money, the foundation can pay a large part of the outstanding legal costs. The foundation and NAM have not commented on the amount.

Once the case has been withdrawn, the homeowners can request compensation from the Groningen Mining Damage Institute (IMG), which pays financial compensation for “serious suffering and grief” as a result of gas extraction in Groningen. The IMG also compensates for material damage.
