Owner of American Bulldogs in Nieuwegein Sentenced to 4 Months in Prison for Attack on Teen Cyclist

The owner of two American bulldogs that bit a boy in Nieuwegein has been given a prison sentence of four months. Half of them are conditional, with a probationary period of ten years. The woman is not allowed to keep dogs during her probationary period.

The dogs attacked a fourteen-year-old cyclist on an industrial estate in Nieuwegein on May 19, 2022. The dogs caused the boy to fall off his bicycle. He was then bitten by both dogs.

He suffered 41 open bite wounds. The teenager had to be taken to hospital for treatment and suffered permanent injuries from the attack. “He is scarred for life,” the court ruling states.

The court finds that the woman acted “significantly carelessly and negligently” by not keeping the dogs under sufficient control. According to the court, the dogs were not on a leash and not muzzled on the day of the attack.

The dogs had attacked and bitten someone before. The court therefore believes that the woman should have been extra alert and careful.

The police judge in Utrecht sentenced the woman in April to a suspended prison sentence of two weeks and 120 hours of community service. The 59-year-old woman appealed against this ruling and will now receive a significantly higher sentence.
