Owner club Nyx critical of rules: “Government does not take responsibility”

Owner Rob de Jong of club Nyx in Amsterdam thinks that the national government should show a little more self-reflection about the operation of the Testing for Access system. Outgoing minister Grapperhaus warned the catering industry today that stricter checks must be made at the door, but according to De Jong, the clubs are already doing that. “Grapperhaus, shame on you.”

That the Testing for Access system is not watertight was once again apparent today. Certainly dozens of people have been infected with the coronavirus after parties at rowing club Skøll and nights out at club Nyx, despite having to show a valid QR code at the door. This proves that a visitor to the event has been tested negative at most 40 hours in advance or has already been fully vaccinated.

Warning

RIVM also reported a doubling of the number of infections in all regions today. At least twenty percent of the infections arose in the catering industry. Reason for outgoing minister Grapperhaus to issue a warning to the catering industry. He believes that checks on a valid admission ticket should be improved.

That puts the owner of one of those clubs where infections were detected, Nyx in Amsterdam, in the wrong way. The government could also show more reflection on their own test system, says Rob de Jong. He admits that things have gone wrong with him recently with infections, but says he is doing everything he can to work according to the Test for Access protocol. This means: checking everyone at the entrance for a valid admission ticket and whether that ticket also fits that person. “99 percent of the clubs have this in order,” says De Jong.

De Jong received a call from the GGD yesterday with the news that visitors to his club have been infected:

Not waterproof

“The system is not watertight, that was already the case in the beginning,” says the club owner. “But then Grapperhaus will rigorously say that this is the last warning for the catering industry. Shame on you. Take responsibility as a government and do not shift it to the catering industry.”

As an example, he mentions the decision by outgoing minister De Jonge to give people immediate access to an event after a Janssen shot, while protection against the virus has only been sufficiently built up weeks later. “Someone who has had a vaccination with Janssen in the afternoon can join me in the club in the evening and therefore has a valid QR code.”

“We and the visitors should be able to assume that what the government has come up with is okay”

Rob de Jong, club owner

And that stings the club owner. Because as a club, for privacy reasons, he cannot see whether he or she has just had his or her shot today. “We and the visitors should be able to assume that what the government has come up with is okay. But if it is not correct, the government will take zero responsibility. We as a catering industry are immediately awarded the black pete.”

The caretaker cabinet did however come back to that rule with the Janssen shot today. It has now been decided to set a waiting period of two weeks before a vaccinated person can go to an event. According to outgoing minister De Jonge, ‘dancing with Jansen’ was immediately introduced to convince more young people to get a shot.
