After a man from Graz was bitten by a snake in his toilet on Monday, the owner of the animal was charged with negligent bodily harm. It was also checked whether the animals had to be removed from the injured man’s 24-year-old neighbor. After he had made up the wildlife report and the animal husbandry was checked according to the veterinary office, he is now allowed to keep his eleven snakes and the gecko.
The snake that bitten the 65-year-old’s genitals was an albino reticulated python, which is non-toxic. The other animals are also only required to be registered, but not subject to authorization.
A veterinary inspection found that the snakes were well-groomed and not neglected. There was therefore no need for action for the office, only small improvements were requested. It would have been different if dangerous snakes had been involved, because then a separate lock system would be necessary to prevent the animals from escaping, said the head of the veterinary unit, Alexandra Gruber, to the APA. The fact that the 24-year-old has eleven queues in the apartment is not a problem, the law does not provide for a quantitative limit.
The public prosecutor will decide whether the holder of the snake will be charged with negligent bodily harm. The offense can be compared to the bite of a dog that was not on a leash, the police said.
