Gizeh (dpa) – After days of waiting, the chef of the German handball players at the World Cup in Egypt is now also allowed to prepare food for the DHB selection.
“Now he’s happy,” said sports director Axel Kromer about Nils Walbrecht. The chef himself sent a photo via Instagram of his new workplace in the team’s hotel near the Giza pyramids. “The wait is over,” wrote Walbrecht to a selfie in front of the stove. “Sunny greetings from #egypt to snowy Germany.”
At first, Walbrecht had to wait a long time for permission, “because the possibilities on site were not so available,” as national coach Alfred Gislason had criticized after his arrival. These have now been created as agreed. “He’s been in the hotel’s pool kitchen since Sunday, where vacationers are likely to get pizza or burgers,” reported Kromer.
From there, Walbrecht could work a little and, in addition to the “very good” hotel meal, prepare a few little things for the team. Tuesday will show whether the chef’s specialties will improve performance. Then the DHB selection in the final preliminary round game against Hungary is about important points for the main round.
