Owl involuntarily traveling in Christmas tree returns to wilderness | NOW

The owl rescued from the Christmas tree destined for Rockefeller Center in New York earlier this month has been released. Caretakers have helped the bird regain its strength, the relevant animal shelter reports Thursday.

The little saw-owl, aptly named Rocky, is “a tough bird” according to its keepers. “It’s good to see her back in the wild.”

A video of Rocky’s release shows that the little owl has a fraction of doubts, yet prefers the wilderness to the hand of one of her keepers. Rocky’s species lives in the forests of North America. A saw-owl usually grows to a maximum of 20 centimeters.

Before Rocky was discovered, she had traveled at least 125 miles. The owl had not eaten for a few days and was therefore given “all the mice it could eat,” the shelter reported earlier. It was only later discovered that Rocky is a female.
