Owen Wilson, the actor who hides depression, addictions and love failures behind comedies

Over the course of his life, Owen Wilson broke his nose twice. The first was playing football at school and the second during a fight. That’s why he has those peculiar traits that characterize him so much, the same ones that have led him to be the renowned actor that he is today.

Acting has not always attracted him, in fact during his youth he worked as a waiter and a journalist, and his true passion was writing. Even so, the twists and turns in his life have led him to occupy a transcendent place on the big screen. His career seemed unstoppable, yet his personal life was far from his professional achievements.

accidental actor

Born in Dallas, Texas on November 18, 1968, Owen Cunningham Wilson has a Hollywood career spanning over three decades. He is the middle of three brothers, also actors: Andrea, the eldest, and Luca, the youngest. At the age of 14 Owen was expelled from school for stealing the answers to a geometry exam, and when they found out, his hair literally fell out because, in addition to being kicked out of school, he was admitted to a military academy, where he was shaved the head, the blond mane. There he revealed that he had an aptitude for writing: he was an editor for the academy magazine and when he left he began studying theater writing at the University of Texas, where he had as a classmate a flamboyant young man who would end up as a cult director : Wes Anderson.

Wilson and his partner Anderson began writing screenplays together. Thus, years later, they created the screenplay for “The Eccentric Tenenbaums” (2001), a film directed by Anderson and starring Wilson, for which both were nominated for an Oscar.

Young Owen never set his sights on acting; He just wanted to be a screenwriter, but he had to star in the movies he was making with his friend Wes Anderson to save the salary of a professional actor. However, in Hollywood they noticed Wilson’s self-confidence and started offering him all kinds of roles, despite the fact that he always confessed “I’m a bad actor.” Maybe that’s why in his early films they always killed off his character at the beginning of the film, like in “Dr. Cable” (1996), “Anaconda” (1997), “Armageddon” (1998) and “The Curse” (1999).

With a very low profile, the star who turns 54 today leads a solitary life away from the red carpet and only releases interviews to promote his premieres since he doesn’t like press conferences for fear of saying something that could embarrass his parents. .

The star of “Los rompebodas” (2005), “Zoolander” (2001) and many other comedies has had a very complex personal life, struggling against addictions and the pressure of the press. “Humor is a way of coping with life, it allows you to endure,” the actor said more than once. Without a doubt, that ability to make people laugh is what has brought him to the pinnacle of success and, personally, what has allowed him to overcome the darkest moments of his life.

Drugs, heartbreak and depression

Wilson has never been married but has always been in many serious relationships over the years. The actor started dating singer Sheryl Crow in 1999, after meeting her on a film set; the romance lasted two years. He then had romances with Gina Gershon, Demi Moore and Jessica Simpson. But it was actress Kate Hudson who melted his brains and broke his heart.

Owen and Kate were engaged in two stages: between August 2006 and May 2007; and between March and May 2008. The actor’s addiction to cocaine and heroin began to destabilize the couple. After three years of twists and turns, Hudson left his life for good.

In May 2007, Hudson called it quits for the first time and People magazine announced the breakup. The split hit the actor who fell into long nights of drugs to cope with the bad time, and that binge consumption, like his courtship, would not end well. News of Kate Hudson’s new romance with actor Dax Shepard didn’t help, and a few months later, Wilson tried to take her life.

On the morning of August 26, 2007, his brother Luke found him passed out and covered in blood in the master bathroom of his home. The cut wrists and the sleeping pills were silent witnesses to his decision. After a 911 call, paramedics managed to revive him and transferred him to St. John Hospital in Santa Monica, California. Later, the fact was confirmed by a member of the Santa Monica Police Department, who reported that Owen Wilson attempted suicide in his home in that city, by slitting his wrists. After being stabilized on St. John’s, the actor was transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where the actor was found to be suffering from a severe episode of depression.

Days later Wilson returned home from the hospital. The people closest to the actor monitored him 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Neither he nor his family wanted to speak publicly about the episode. “With all due respect, I ask the media to allow me to receive medical treatment and heal in private during this difficult time,” the star said in a statement, without giving too many details on what happened. Two days later, Owen walked off the set of “Tropic Thunder,” which he was working on as an actor and producer with his friend and regular collaborator, Ben Stiller.

Meanwhile, Hudson has offered all his love and support to his ex after what happened. She gave him a second chance but they soon broke up again. “Owen is a lovely person and I love him very much”, she said in an interview, “and I wish him good things: health and everything he wants in life”.

An exemplary father in the movies but not in real life

Gradually, the actor resumed his life and career. He has returned to participate in interesting projects and to find a return to the benefits of fame. He was also the father of three children with three different women: Robert (10), Finn (7) and Lyla (3), a girl he refused to acknowledge.

In 2010 Wilson fell in love with Jade Duell, a flight attendant he met on a flight from Los Angeles to Washington. They dated for a year before welcoming their first child, Robert Ford Wilson, into the world in January 2011. “It’s a beautiful and amazing experience. Everyone repeats that my life will change and I’m starting to understand why,” said the actor about his new family life. However, the couple broke up just five months after the birth of the child. But Wilson discovered that he loved being a father: “Kids are so fragile, but when it’s yours you suddenly feel so much more secure,” he told Cosmopolitan magazine in 2011. “You really have this bond, this real connection to this ‘thing’ that a month ago didn’t exist.” ‘was not even. It’s strange, their screams are like beautiful music.”

In 2014, fitness instructor Caroline Lindqvist gave birth to Wilson’s second child, a boy named Finn. The pregnancy caused a stir as Lindqvist was married to another man at the time. The ad also garnered attention because Wilson and the coach, who had been friends for more than a decade, weren’t officially dating. It was Lindqvist herself who was in charge of pointing out that they weren’t dating the actor but that they both simply wanted to have a child and decided to do it together. “Owen and I are very good friends and are having a baby together,” she told the Daily Mail she, herself six months pregnant.

Wilson’s relationship with his next girlfriend Varunie Vongsvirates didn’t end well. The couple dated for five years, and in 2018, Vongsvirates gave birth to a baby girl named Lyla, but Owen wasn’t by her side. Vongsvirates stated that the actor has no contact with her daughter, that he has never met her or that he has been involved with Lyla since her birth; but he added that Wilson recognizes her financially.

Despite their time together, Wilson requested a paternity test and after the DNA was confirmed, he continued to avoid his daughter. According to court documents, the actor doesn’t want custody of Lyla, who is the spitting image of him. Neither the paternity test, the similarities with the daughter, nor the statements of her ex were enough to obtain a statement from the actor. Currently, Wilson can be seen spending time with his older children, but he hasn’t been seen with Lyla since she was born.
