Lauberhorn, a love-hate relationship! But love is much more sustainable than what has been missed, hate.
–
And although I have never been able to win on this legendary circuit, in Wengen I received far more than I could have given myself.
–
I still owe the Lauberhorn race CHF 1.2 to 1.5 million! Because I wanted too much in training in 1972 at 130 km / h in the Hannegg shot and flew into the forest between the tree trunks, the FIS shortly afterwards ordered safety measures in the millions.
–
However, like everyone else who was there at the start, I received a unique backdrop, unique feelings of change between fear and satisfaction and a unique challenge mixed with adrenaline rushes, balancing act and borderline experiences.
–
It can also be done without the Lauberhorn
Clearly, the Lauberhorn downhill run in Wengen is part of the Alpine World Cup. I say this with conviction, even though I know that it can be done without and has often gone without.
–
Due to snow and weather changes, the races had to be moved to St. Moritz, Grindelwald, Crans, Leukerbad and Veysonnaz. Yes, even outside of our borders in Are, Val d’Isere and – almost unbelievably – even in Kitzbühel we have already driven instead.
–
But in the calendar – I am sure – the Lauberhorn race will stay and it will also take place if the weather and snow conditions allow it.

Do you need gigantism?
The discussion about not straining the word argument has its good points.
–
The FIS has to ask itself whether the system of awarding the races is still correct and corresponds to modern times when one is dependent on certain traditional events for marketing and spectators.
–
The million dollar question cannot always be solved with additional income according to the motto: We spend more, so more has to come in. The race on the Lauberhorn itself is gigantic. Does it have to end in gigantism and swallow millions?
–
All organizers whine on the cost side, and yet dozens of new organizers are queuing up to step in.
–
Adventure hunting on the Matterhorn?
The planned record descent in Zermatt over five kilometers is a completely different topic. That would be the opposite direction of modern descent. It should be shorter because it is cheaper.
–
Suitable for TV because the viewer wants to see everything. Without too long start intervals for fairness – and above all peppered with attractive key points such as Hundschopf, Kernen-S and Hannegg shot.
–
From the little Matterhorn to Italy would be exactly the opposite. But with a good story.
–
Perhaps seven classic runs in the annual program are enough. And we’re going on adventures again. No sprints! It’s downhill marathons. Maybe even in teams of 2 or 3.
–
A series with “Zermatt – Italy” plus the traditional Parsenn derby in Davos and the inferno race in Mürren.
–
Both classics, even older than the Lauberhorn races.
