Oviedo will win one hundred thousand square for pedestrians by closing the traffic lanes of the historic centre | Radio Asturias

Oviedo will close to traffic starting this upcoming Monday, several streets in the historic centre, in the framework of a three-phase plan intended for to win one hundred thousand square feet of space for the mobility of pedestrians, contributing also to boost the economic and commercial activity, according to have announced the councillors of Citizen Security, José Ramón Prado and Urbanism, Ignacio Cuesta.

Prado he pointed out that “the plan has a provisional character, but with a vocation of permanence, a time to evaluate its impact”; in principle is conditioned to the setbacks or blips of the pandemic of coronavirus but it is not ruled out even its extension to other areas once they have been evaluated on their effects on the traffic.

The plan starts on Monday, may 18, when it will then be for pedestrian use, the axis of the streets of Mendizabal, Ramon y Cajal and street Wells up Rose. In the second phase, the following week, it will restrict the traffic from the Plaza de la Escandalera up Fruela and the first part of Rose to the intersection with Martinez Marina and Cabo Noval. The third phase, “more complex” according to recognized city council members, would restrict the second part of Rose up Santa Susana, Martinez Marina and Cabo Noval. This will require detours of traffic on the street Santa Susana that will be two-way.

According to the councillor Prado “we will seek the maximum consensus with all the affected” ; the council member Costs also not ruled out that part of those spaces closed to traffic may be occupied by terraces and hospitality.

We will respect the traffic of the residents , taxis and loading and unloading. Already on Monday, the first streets affected will be closed with fences and surveillance of the Local Police. It is not ruled out installing according to the plan going forward, bollards, or other closure system.
