It looks like we can expect a formal announcement that the Overwatch League is shutting down in the coming weeks, as esports reporter Jacob Wolf has published a report stating that the teams are about to vote on the league’s future and that the OWL will soon be disbanded.
Anyone hoping the teams would be interested in keeping the league alive will unfortunately have to go elsewhere to get their competitive Overwatch fix in 2024, as Wolf notes that teams are leaning toward taking the $6 million compensatory buyout to decide to ax and kill the OWL. In practice, this means that Microsoft has to bite the bullet and pay out 120 million dollars to the 20 different organizations that made up OWL.
Regarding the future of the competitive game Overwatch, it is mentioned that the Saudi Arabian-backed ESL FACEIT Group has been approached to run tournaments from next year, and that these negotiations were conducted even before the vote to disband the OWL took place.
