The purpose of this meeting is to review the most significant events of each of the weeks of competition of theOverwatch League 2021 as well as our main expectations for the upcoming matches. Today we look back at the eighth and ninth weeks of competition.
We are now in the middle of the 2021 Overwatch League season, after this June Joust ended last weekend, there are only two tournaments left before this year’s fixtures close. During week 8, we attended the regional elimination matches between the teams selected through their placement matches. Then this weekend took place the June Joust, opposing the four teams who managed to qualify.
As every week since the start of the season, we are rather spoiled in terms of surprises and reversals of situations. Indeed, the best teams of the previous years seem to be behind and give way to teams that we have not seen so high in the rankings for a very long time, if not never for some of them.
Qualifying tournaments by region
The playoffs will have allowed us to see continue the rise of the Atlanta Reign having eliminated the Boston Uprising and the San Francisco Shock in two speedy games completed with a score of 3-0. Scores representative of all the playoffs of this tournament, whether on the West side or the East side. Once again, we can notice that the Hero Pool will have made it possible to diversify the different tables, often occupied by the same teams.
The Houston Outlaws who were able to shine during the May Melee 2021 will be eliminated by the winners of this previous tournament, the Dallas Fuel who also continue their series of victories in order to qualify in due form to participate in the June Joust and thus hope win a second tournament this season. As for the East division, the New-York Excelsior present us a good course and qualify alongside the Shanghai Dragons, at the top of the rankings for several years.
Tournament weekend
Last weekend was June Joust 2021, finally the moment to discover the team that will emerge victorious from the second tournament of the Overwatch League 2021. Despite an incredible run during the placement and qualifying matches, the teams of Atlanta Reign gets rid of the New-York Excelsior before losing to the Texan team and then to the Shanghai team, the two most dangerous teams of the season.
Like the previous tournament, the rivalry between the Shanghai Dragons and the Dallas Fuel does not end as the two teams will face each other twice during this tournament weekend. After a first match won by the Texans, it will finally be the Shanghai Dragons who will be crowned winners of June Joust 2021, after an incredible match lasting three hours and thanks to a composition that they will not have hesitated to keep during most of this tournament.
Our expectations for the coming weeks
So ends the June Joust 2021 and we are more than impatient to find our favorite teams in the placement matches for the Summer Showdown, the third tournament of the Overwatch League 2021, which will start on Friday, June 25, after the week. traditional break between the different tournaments. In addition, the Hero Pool will be absent from it and will undoubtedly allow us to see new teams rise to the top of the rankings.
It also looks like the San Francisco Shock era is coming to an end and it’s good to see new teams reach the various finals, bringing better twists and turns during the clashes. Will the Shanghai Dragons and the Dallas Fuel continue to cross paths during the final weekend? Will the Houston Outlaws and Chengdu Hunters shine during the Summer Showdown? We will have to wait a little longer to find answers to these questions and we will meet in two weeks to debrief together the first matches of this third tournament.
