Overwatch improvements make Reinhardt overpowered

For more than four years, Overwatch has remained a game fairly balanced, and characters rarely feel overpowered due to constant Blizzard tweaks. However, Overwatch developers may have gone too far with a recent buff of Reinhardt, as many fans say that the character’s hammer is “broken”.
Reinhardt’s recent buff came as part of an experimental update, and while Rein Mains will likely expect the new hero’s power level to hold up, players of all other characters are likely expecting a nerf. While Reinhardt’s hammer damage was only increased by 10 points, causing each hit to remove 85 HP instead of the usual 75, the change is more drastic than it sounds. Players quickly discovered that under the right circumstances, Reinhardt can now remove most of the Overwatch roster in 2 hammer blows.

Rein’s newfound power was captured on video by a Twitter user named @jonoverwatc, where the player became one of many to call Reinhardt’s current form “broken.” By working with certain healers, Reinhardt’s changes can become strong enough that 2-shot heroes have 200 hit points, a big part of the game roster. Mercy, who saw a fun change in a previous Overwatch update, can provide a damage boost to Rein, with Zenyatta adding a Discord orb to her targets. With two expert healers on his side, the new Reinhardt is essentially unstoppable.
This new Reinhardt would be scary enough if the benefits stopped at the hammer, however Reinhardt also got a health boost. By adding another 50 HP to the shield wielder’s health bar, Reinhardt can now swing his improved hammer for a longer hit, making him even more dangerous in long team fights. With support boosts and the use of strategies like the ambush location at Lijiang Tower, the German Knight will strike fear into players for some time.
It’s also worth noting that while Rein can take down any target with ease, the range and extent of his hammer allow him to damage multiple heroes at once. With a Mercy that gives him a damage increase and another Hero that heals Reinhardt, the character can take out an entire team if used by an expert player. Beyond that, his ultimate will charge faster due to the higher damage dealt, making Earthshatters more common than ever. If players want to deal damage in Overwatch, the use of Priority Pass may no longer be required.

It will be interesting to see if Blizzard gives Reinhardt some love at the Winter Wonderland 2020 event to celebrate the benefit, as a skin could put the icing on the cake for fans starring the hero. With his squire Brigitte getting into the holiday spirit, it seems fitting that a new design for Reinhardt is also being shared.
