The 6v6, which arouses so much nostalgia among Overwatch veterans, will be tested during season 14.
Blizzard has heard the cry of the community: the 6v6 format is back in Overwatch 2. After much speculation, this modality will not replace the popular 5v5, but will instead offer a new gaming option for everyone.
A return to the roots
With the launch of Overwatch 2, Blizzard opted for the 5v5 format to modernize the dynamics of the game, but now, the format 6v6 returns to offer more diversity of strategies. The 6v6, which arouses so much nostalgia among veterans, will be tested during season 14, starting in December. This return is not just on a whim; seeks to revive interest and offer a fresh gaming experience. Aaron Keller, game director, noted that this change is an opportunity to reconnect with players who miss 12-player games.
Two ways to experience 6v6
Season 14 promises two exciting versions of 6v6. The first test will implement an “open queue” with unusual flexibility: each team of six must have at least one hero from each role (tank, damage and support) and a maximum of three in any role. This option will allow role changes during the game, giving rise to creative compositions.
The second test will maintain the classic 2-2-2 composition, which balances the number of tanks, damage heroes and support. Adjustments, especially to tanks, will be implemented to adapt them to this format, such as reducing their power and survivability for an optimal experience without disturbing the current state of the game.
These changes are not mere experiments. Blizzard wants both new and veteran players to find appeal in both modesenrich the experience and open a wider range of strategic possibilities.
Innovations in sight with the 6v6
5v5 has been a success, attracting new players, but it has not forgotten those who long for the days of 6v6. Blizzard is looking for a balance that will satisfy its entire player base, not only with another format, but with new modes and tests. Ahead of Season 14, we will also see adjustments to 5v5 mode to keep the game fair and competitive.
