Overview of costs, insurance and validity

As the name suggests, a seasonal license plate is not valid all year round. But what seems like a disadvantage has a great benefit for many motorists.

Don’t drive and save: This is an advantage of the so-called seasonal license plate. Because it is only valid for a certain period of time – at least two, but no more than eleven months. The ADAC informs that only reduced insurance and tax rates are required. The vehicle tax is only calculated for the seasonal period. Usually, owners of seasonal vehicles such as mobile homes, motorcycles or convertibles use it.

These vehicles are often shut down over the winter. In order not to have to go to the registration office twice a year to register and deregister, there is a seasonal license plate that stays on the car even when it is not in use. It saves time, fees and reduces the administrative burden for the authority, the ADAC names other advantages.

Season indicator: This is how you recognize it

The license plate with limited validity can be purchased for a minimum period of two months and a maximum of eleven months. The period of validity cannot be extended. If you want to use your vehicle for longer, you have to apply for a new registration period.

The relevant period of validity is stamped on the license plate on the right. The number above a dash indicates the month in which the operating period begins, the number below when it ends. For example, if the vehicle is registered from April 1st to October 31st, there is a “04” above the line and a “10” below it.
