More than 25,000 Flemish parents have taken corona leave in recent months. This is a temporary extra parental leave intended to combine working from home and pre-teaching. But what many parents probably did not know is that in many cases the corresponding premium is lower than with normal parental leave.

The Flemish ABVV has calculated that the difference can even rise to EUR 184 per month less. The union is also suing that social profit is the hardest hit, including the health care sector. The age and the exact system also determine the difference. You can find out exactly how much that is in the table below.
The reason for this difference is the decision of the Flemish government not to grant the incentive bonus, which is part of normal parental leave, for corona leave. According to competent minister Hilde Crevits (CD&V), this was necessary to avoid that in some sectors parents with corona leave would net more than colleagues who continue to work full-time. The federal government has already increased its premium. However, this is negative for many parental leave.
