Overnight stays outside the hotel exceed pre-COVID levels until August

Non-hotel facilities in Spain exceeded 25.6 million overnight stays in August, 15.1% more than in 2021, and in the cumulative figure of the eight months they increased by 68.7%, reaching pre- pandemic, according to the latest INE survey on occupancy of non-hotel accommodation.

The 3.17 million resident tourists made 14.45 million overnight stays, 10.3% less than in 2021, while 1.93 million non-residents added 11.2 million overnight stays, an increase of 81 , 5%, compared to the same month of 2021.

Tourist apartments

Tourist apartments were an accommodation choice in August for 1.82 million tourists, who spent 11 million overnight stays, or 23.1% more than in 2021. Those of residents decreased by 16.9%, while those of non-residents grew by 94.5%. The average stay increased by 3.3% compared to August 2021, reaching 6 nights per traveler. In the month under review, 57.3% of the seats offered (+ 15.9%) were occupied, rising to 59.7% on weekends.

Among those who chose the apartments, the Canary Islands were the preferred destination, with over 2.5 million overnight stays and a 56.5% increase, but the autonomous community with the highest occupancy was Cantabria, with the 90.5% of the apartments offered. By areas, the Costa Blanca is the preferred destination, with over 1.4 million overnight stays. The islands of Ibiza-Formentera have the highest occupancy rate, with 89.2% of the apartments offered.

Campsites

The campsites received 2.11 million tourists and a total of 11.25 million overnight stays, 9.8% more than last year. Those of residents decreased by 6.6% to 7.28 million and those of non-residents increased by 62.2% to 3.97 million. Employment was 59.4%, climbing to 62.3% on weekends.

35.3% of overnight stays in campsites are made by non-resident travelers. France is the main issuing market, with 32.4% of the total of non-residents. Structures for rural tourism

The 638,619 tourists who chose rural accommodation in August totaled 2.42 million overnight stays, 1.2% less than in 2021. Those of residents decreased by 10.4% (1.87 million), while those of non-residents increased by 50.5% (557,927). Employment was 44.3%.

Despite a decline of 6%, Castilla y León was the preferred destination, with 339,854 overnight stays, and the Balearic Islands led by occupancy (71.8%). For tourist areas, the island of Mallorca was the preferred destination, with 188,056 overnight stays and Menorca had the highest occupancy (82.1%).

In the hostels, 983,442 overnight stays (+ 49.6%) were recorded by 530,535 travelers. Those of residents increased by 7.5% and those of non-residents by 198.3%. 40.7% of the beds were occupied in these establishments. Galicia was the preferred destination, with 275,131 overnight stays and the Community of Madrid achieved the highest occupancy, with 60.6% of the places offered.
