The water level of the Overijsselse Vecht reached a record high on Wednesday. The large amount of water continues to cause problems in other places as well. For example, Loevestein Castle will not be accessible in the coming days and there is quicksand on the beach at Monster.
A water level of 13.14 meters above NAP was measured in the Overijsselse Vecht on Wednesday, reports the Vechtstromen Water Board. That is 7 centimeters higher than in 1998.
The water board warns that the level will remain high in the near future. The discharge of the river, which flows into the Netherlands from Germany at Hardenberg, may increase somewhat on Wednesday. “The Vecht is therefore quite full and goes far beyond its banks here and there.”
The Vechtstromen Water Board also reports that the discharge of the Dinkel and the Regge, tributaries of the Vecht, is expected to decrease slightly.
The water board deployed the so-called ‘dike army’ on the dikes along the Vecht on a one-off basis. This team of volunteer dike keepers is trained to inspect the dikes at vulnerable locations.

Loevestein Castle will not be available in the coming days
Loevestein Castle is closed on Thursday from 4 p.m. due to high water. The castle in the Gelderland municipality of Zaltbommel is no longer accessible because the access road is flooded. The castle, which is now a museum, is located in the floodplains of the Waal and the Afgedamde Maas.
According to manager Tim Schrijver, the castle and the existing collection are not at risk for the time being. All activities at the castle until January 1 have been canceled.
The water is currently 1 centimeter lower than the asphalt on the Munnikenlandse Maaskade, the only access road. The water level is expected to rise by about 30 centimeters.
Warning for quicksand on Monster beach
People who want to get a breath of fresh air on the beach between The Hague and Monster should be careful. The rain has caused quicksand to form in several places at the so-called Sand Motor, an artificial sandbank that was created to naturally strengthen the coast.
The municipality of Westland calls on people to avoid that part of the beach. Quicksand can also form in other places.

Lights walk Zwolle cancelled
The Light Walk in Zwolle could not take place on Wednesday evening due to flooding. The walk would take place in the park Het Engels Werk on the banks of the IJssel. More than four thousand people would participate.
The park is too wet due to the rain and parts of the route are not accessible. According to the organization, trees also fall because their roots are in the mud.
Countdown moment in Arnhem moved due to high water
The central countdown moment on New Year’s Eve in Arnhem has been moved from the John Frost Bridge to the Jacob Groenewoud Plantsoen, near the bridge on the bank of the Rhine. The municipality has chosen this with a view to the safety of those present. The bridge will remain open to traffic.
It is the first time that Arnhem has organized a joint countdown moment with a subsequent fireworks show. This year, for the first time in the Gelderland municipality, there is a ban on lighting consumer fireworks.
