For many immigrants, opening a bank account in New York can be an intimidating process.
Several of these immigrants do not have a legal status or documents issued by the country.
However, this is not an impediment for people to obtain an account and a debit card.
Experts point out that having a bank account can help you better manage your money, be able to carry out online transactions or start a credit score.
The requirements to open an account vary depending on the banking institution, but most require two pieces of identification and a social security number.
But, for people who do not have this or those who do not have legal status, they can do the following:
You can present your passport. A secondary ID from your country which may be a license. A proof of address that can be a bill for a service or even a cell phone bill. In some cases, as a substitute for the Social Security number, they may ask for the ITIN number.
Identifications that you can obtain in New York regardless of your immigration status.
