After being diagnosed, Blair underwent a stem cell transplant in 2019 and has been in remission since 2021. But living with this disease is still difficult.
“Sometimes I can’t eat for days. (..) I need more sleep than a bear in winter,” said Blair.
She reflected her struggle with the disease in the poignant documentary “Introducing, Selma Blair” (Introducing, Selma Blair), in which the actress shares very private shots from her everyday life. “Sorry, I can’t talk right now – we’re filming the last days of my life,” Blair reveals in the film.
No matter how insidious this disease is, no matter how different the symptoms are, the actress is ready to talk about it out loud. Also, she has not given up the idea of continuing her acting career.
“The door is closed until it’s kept open,” she says. “People with special needs behind the camera and in front of it, or on stage, will be the ones who set the tone. I have hope for this industry. Times are changing. I want to encourage that, just by being a loud squeaky wheel. To listen. And to be loud.”

“My doctors encouraged me not to talk about it publicly. They said people wouldn’t understand my diagnosis. They were worried I wouldn’t get a job. They said my disease might not progress – why share it? ‘You’re an actress, your body, your voice – that’s all you have.’ They were wrong, that’s not all I have.”
