Overclocked Core i9-12900K at 5.2 GHz: what is the power and consumption?

The i9-12900K core will come on the market equipped with eight strong Golden Cove cores, eight weaker Gracemont, at 5 to 5.3 GHz and 3.7 to 3.9 GHz (turbo of all cores and the highest turbo of 1 or 2 cores). The 5.2 GHz clock on all cores is not a high overclocking, but nothing much better today can be expected.

Now it is again information published on Chinese forums Bilibili, where a well-known “enthusiastic citizen” presents a test of an engineering sample of this processor, which should have large cores clocked at just 5.2 GHz at a voltage of 1.385 V, which brought a consumption of 330 W. This consumption will most likely be measured on the whole assembly, ie including losses of resources, so nothing much can be deduced from it.-

The text also says “no small core”, which would suggest that the small cores have been deactivated. However, a given processor in the CPU-Z test would hardly achieve the same performance with only eight cores as a 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X, if we realize that overclocked Golden Cove cores should have “only” less than a third higher according to the single-threaded test. Of course, it is necessary to take into account that the tact of the Ryzen cores, unlike the overclocked Core, decreased in the total load, but even then it is not possible to expect that the Ryzen would be defeated by Intel with half the number of cores. So, of course, the test includes the performance of eight weaker cores in the Core, but it’s still a decent result.

Server Wccftech it also brings other tests, according to which the strong Alder Lake kernels will be about a quarter more powerful in the Cinebench R23 rendering tests (1598 vs. 2007 points). However, again due to the fact that the remaining eight cores are weaker, we show Ryzen 9 5950X (27461 vs. 28963 points) in a better light in the total load of all cores in a better light. It is very similar in CPU-Z tests.-

Today, it can be said that so many tests of Alder Lake-S processors have already passed the world that we can say a few things with almost certainty. In terms of the overall performance of all cores, the new Intely on the Ryzen 5000 will usually not reach it, but Intel will most likely claim the title of manufacturer of the most powerful game processors again, as games will usually not use more than eight cores anyway. And it’s not just games, but all applications that can’t use more than eight physical cores, as they’ll usually run faster on Alder Lake-S.

Of course, AMD has been aware of this for some time, and that is why this is why it is preparing new versions of the Ryzen 5000 equipped with V-Cache memory, which is to increase game performance by about 15 percent. AMD will be able to do that until it comes with Zen 4 processors.
