Today marks International Day of Premature Babies.
In 2022, more than 11 thousand premature babies were born in Tajikistan, and more than 1000 of them – with extremely low body weight – died.
Today, November 17, is the International Day of Premature Babies. Normal pregnancy lasts 38-40 weeks.
According to the chief freelance neonatologist of the Ministry of Health of Tajikistan, Abdugani Yunusov, in 2022, 253 thousand 930 children were born in the republic. Of these, 11 thousand 736 newborns were premature and this is 4.5% of the total number of newborns
10 years ago this percentage was 3%.
According to the doctor, out of more than 11 thousand premature babies, 1 thousand 579 died.
Yunusov noted that the number of children born prematurely is growing throughout the world.
And the most vulnerable children are those born weighing from 500 to 1000 grams.
The doctor noted that there are 4 degrees of prematurity, depending on the baby’s weight:
1st degree: 2500 -2001 grams
2nd degree: 2000 – 1500 grams
3rd degree: 1500 – 1001 grams
Grade 4: 1000 grams or less.
Yunusov also added that with new technologies and methodology, babies weighing more than 500 grams and 26 cm tall have a chance of salvation (previously this was problematic).
But such babies must be provided with special conditions of detention; they must be provided with the full range of necessary assistance, including specialized care.
What health problems accompany premature babies?
The main negative consequences that occur in premature babies are cerebral palsy, cognitive impairment, visual and hearing impairment.

The lower the weight of the child and the gestational age, the more likely such consequences are, noted the interlocutor of Asia-Plus.
The most common causes of prematurity, according to the neonatologist, are considered to be maternal infantility, inflammatory diseases of the female genital organs, pathological pregnancy and illness of the pregnant woman, previous abortions, multiple pregnancies, incompatibility of mother and fetus in terms of Rh factor and blood groups.
“Premature babies have distinctive external signs. Their skin is thin, dry, wrinkled, and abundantly covered with fluff. The lack of maturity of the blood vessels is clearly manifested if you put the child on his side – the skin takes on a contrasting pink color, says the doctor. –
Therefore, premature babies have a peculiar physique – they have a relatively large head, sometimes open cranial sutures, small and lateral fontanelles, a low umbilical ring, and poor development of subcutaneous fatty tissue.”
Also, according to Dr. Yunusov, some newborns have pathology – viral or bacterial infections, such as: physiological jaundice, hemolytic disease of the newborn, anemia, diseases of the bronchopulmonary, digestive and urinary systems, cardiovascular diseases.

Therefore, the specialist says, a child born prematurely is monitored at the place of residence and periodic consultations with specialists are required, first of all, a neurologist, as well as a surgeon, otolaryngologist, and ophthalmologist.
“All diseases can be cured gradually, and despite all the consequences, babies who were born prematurely can live happily ever after,” he notes.
With good care and proper attention from parents and doctors, these children can quite successfully catch up with the development of their peers within a year,” concluded Abdugani Yunusov.
