A Russian Su-27 fighter fired a missile in the immediate vicinity of a British RC-135 Rivet Joint reconnaissance plane that was patrolling international airspace over the Black Sea.
British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said at the publication The Guardian.
He said two Russian Su-27s “interacted” with the unarmed aircraft, one of which “fired a missile into the RAF Rivet Joint area out of sight.”
The incident occurred on September 29th. Subsequently, British planes suspended their Black Sea patrols and Wallace “expressed concern” to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. In Russia, they replied that it was a “technical malfunction”.
Britain has resumed patrols on the Black Sea, now the reconnaissance planes are escorted by fighters.
Wallace noted that Russian planes often escort NATO planes over the Black Sea, sometimes carrying out dangerous maneuvers near them.
