More than 7,600 Russian servicemen have applied for voluntary surrender in Ukrainian captivity within the framework of the “I want to live” project.
This was stated by the deputy permanent representative of Ukraine in international organizations in Vienna, Natalia Kostenko, quoted by Ukrinform.
According to her, another mobilization campaign is taking place against the background of significant losses in Russia, and some military personnel from Russia and Belarus are becoming more interested in the possibility of surrender.
Thus, in January, the project’s website was visited by 5.6 million users, of which 4.7 million were from Russia. So far, they have left more than 7,600 surrender requests.
“Before Russian propaganda distorts the facts, I would like to assure you that the detention of prisoners of war who voluntarily surrender under the project is in accordance with the provisions of the Geneva Conventions.
If they wish, they can return home as a result of an exchange or ask for asylum,” Kostenko said.
