Last Wednesday (October 9th), Werder’s record player Dieter Burdenski died unexpectedly at the age of 73. Before the start of the international match in Munich against Holland (1-0), the former national goalkeeper was remembered. It is now clear when and how Bremen will say goodbye to the popular “Budde”.
Next Tuesday (October 22nd, 2:30 p.m.) a funeral service co-organized by Werder will take place in Bremen’s “Die Glocke” concert hall. Former teammates, numerous companions, business partners as well as friends and family of the Werder honorary captain are expected. Over 750 guests are invited. The funeral service is public and therefore accessible to everyone. It has not yet been decided who will give the eulogy.

This is how Werder is planning Burdenski’s farewell
Burdenski’s death caused consternation in the Werder family. Three days earlier, the former goalkeeper coach had attended the home game against Freiburg in the Weserstadion as part of the 1999 DFB Cup winners. Burdenski stood between the Werder posts for 16 years (from 1972 to 1988), played 444 Bundesliga games and is the club’s record player.
The loss of Burdenski is another big blow for Werder. Just two months ago, ex-manager and supervisory board chairman Willi Lemke (✝︎77) also died unexpectedly.
There will be a minute’s silence at the upcoming home game against Leverkusen (October 26th). As before in Wolfsburg, Werder will appear with a mourning ribbon. From Thursday (11 a.m.) a condolence book will also be available in the Werder Museum “Wuseum”.
