As a result, they often pay an unnecessarily high premium, according to a survey by consumer advisor Pricewise.
This is – apart from the fact that older people often need more care and have additional insurance – mainly due to the loyalty to their insurer, says Suzanne Löwik, health insurance expert at Pricewise. “Many people, especially the elderly, do not or rarely switch health insurers for fear of being underinsured.”
Premium higher, insurance not the same
According to her, this group will stick with the same insurer for years, often since the transition from the health insurance fund to the new health insurance in 2006.
“That is of course easy, but insurers increase the premium each year and often change coverages and policy conditions. The premium is therefore getting higher, but the insurance does not stay the same. It is therefore very possible that the insurance you took out ten years ago no longer fits you.”

The research also shows that young people often opt for the lowest premium.
10 to 14 euros more per month
It is striking, according to Pricewise, that younger generations more often pay attention to sustainable health insurers and pay an extra premium for this. Almost half of the respondents indicate that they want to pay about 10 to 14 euros more per month for this.
