Over 5,300-year-old rice field discovered in eastern China – 2024-03-29 10:09:20

/ world today news/ Archaeologists have discovered a prehistoric rice field site that has been dated from 5300 to 5500 years before our era. The rice field is located in east China’s Zhejiang province, Xinhua reported.

The find covers an area of about 1,000 square meters, the ancient rice field was discovered in the central habitation area of the Hemudu Neolithic culture, the Ningbo Municipal Research Academy for Cultural Heritage Management added.

During the excavations, three mounds were found with nine fields for sowing the produce, remains of rice and weeds. An irrigation and drainage ditch was also uncovered at the site, along with a road that is believed to have connected the surrounding dwellings to the paddy field.

The nine pits were most likely formed during the renovation of the hills and moat in prehistoric times, the researchers said.

All these new discoveries help to reveal more information about the complete rice field system of the past. The finding provides more detailed information on the agricultural regime for planting rice in the local plain area, the research academy added.

The Hemudu culture belongs to the prehistoric society that lived along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. This culture is named after the city of Hemudu, which is located next to Ningbo. The Hemudu are known for their rice agriculture and their unique style of architecture using ‘stilt buildings’.
