“Over 500 Health Workers Trained on Safe Abortion Care in Guerrero, Mexico”

Chilpancingo, Gro., May 16, 2023.- One year after commemorating that Guerrero became the eighth state to allow the voluntary interruption of pregnancy in Mexico, the Secretary of Health, Aidé Ibarez Castro held a meeting with representatives of the Guerrero Network for Women’s Rights, Observatory of Violence against Women, Redefine Guerrero-Marea Verde Guerrero and Aliadas por la Justicia.

During this work meeting with Ana Gabriela Candela, coordinator of the Guerrero Network for Women’s Rights and María Luisa Garfias Marín, president of Aliadas por la Justicia, Ibarez Castro stressed the commitment that the state agency has with all women from Guerrero regardless of the decision you make regarding your pregnancy.

He highlighted that more than 500 health workers have been trained on the protocols for safe abortion care, as well as the criteria for safe abortion services in the current legal framework to guarantee quality, humane care, with prospects for gender.

With the application of seven virtual courses aimed at the personnel of the health units in the state.

The head of the state agency added that in the entity there are three Safe Abortion Services (SAS) modules, located in Chilpancingo, Chilapa and Iguala, she also commented that it is intended to expand to the rest of the state regions with the authorization of other modules in the general hospitals of Acapulco, Coyuca de Catalán, Tlapa, Zihuatanejo, Ometepec and Ayutla, as well as in the CAAPS clinic.

These modules aim to guarantee safe abortion care during the first trimester of pregnancy, including Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy (IVE) and Legal Interruption of Pregnancy (ILE), without violating the rights of the applicants.

This meeting allowed for an exchange of proposals, where both parties agreed to maintain constant communication and coordinated work so that every woman has access to a safe, free, comprehensive abortion free of stigma and discrimination.

In addition, they agreed that the issue of prevention should be addressed from the earliest ages to prevent damage to the physical, mental and sexual health of children, for which they agreed to seek the support of medical associations and civil associations that join to this initiative.
