Over 400 People Detained in Russia While Paying Tribute to Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny
The sudden death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has sent shockwaves through the nation and beyond. St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, saw over 200 arrests alone. Among those detained was Grigory Mikhnov-Voitenko, a priest of the Apostolic Orthodox Church, who had planned to hold a memorial service for Navalny. He was charged with organizing a rally and later suffered a stroke while in police custody.
The courts in St. Petersburg wasted no time in handing down sentences. Forty-two of those detained on Friday were ordered to serve jail terms ranging from one to six days, while nine others received fines. In Moscow, at least six people were sentenced to 15 days in jail. Similar cases were reported in other cities such as Krasnodar and Bryansk.
The timing of Navalny’s death is particularly significant, as it occurred just a month before Russia’s presidential election. President Vladimir Putin is widely expected to secure another six years in power. The cause of Navalny’s death remains shrouded in uncertainty, raising questions and suspicions among his supporters. It is unclear when the authorities will release his body to his grieving family, further fueling speculation.
Navalny’s team firmly believes that he was “murdered” and accuses the authorities of deliberately obstructing the release of his body. Navalny’s mother and lawyers have encountered conflicting information from various institutions regarding the retrieval of his remains. The situation has left them feeling manipulated and deceived. “They’re driving us around in circles and covering their tracks,” said Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh.
The lack of transparency surrounding Navalny’s death is deeply troubling to his closest ally and strategist, Leonid Volkov. He points out that the penal colony where Navalny died is equipped with an extensive surveillance system, with cameras capturing every movement. Yet, no footage has been released to shed light on the circumstances surrounding his demise. Volkov asserts that there is no room for uncertainty in this case.
According to a note given to Navalny’s mother, he passed away at 2:17 p.m. on Friday. Prison officials informed her that her son succumbed to “sudden death syndrome.” However, Ivan Zhdanov, the director of Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation, expressed doubts about this explanation. Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service reported that Navalny fell ill after a walk and lost consciousness at the penal colony in Kharp, located about 1,900 kilometers northeast of Moscow. Despite the arrival of an ambulance, attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The cause of death is still under investigation.
Navalny’s journey has been fraught with adversity. Since his arrest in January 2021, upon his return to Moscow from Germany where he had been recovering from the nerve agent poisoning, he has faced numerous charges that he vehemently denies. Following his most recent conviction, which sentenced him to 19 years in prison, Navalny acknowledged that he was effectively serving a life sentence under the current regime.
Hours after news of Navalny’s death broke, his wife, Yulia Navalnaya, made a poignant appearance at the Munich Security Conference. Expressing uncertainty about the official Russian reports, she warned that those responsible for her husband’s fate would bear the weight of their actions. She held Putin and his government accountable for the suffering inflicted upon her family and the nation.
