Over 2,000 Vaccinated Against Ebola in Mbandaka, DRC

Mbandaka, April 09, 2023 (ACP).- About 2,328 people have been vaccinated against the Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Mbandaka, capital of Equateur province, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, said Friday, during an interview with the ACP, Dr. Zéphirin Mossoko Kumu, field coordinator of the prophylactic campaign.

« These statistics come from three sites equipped for this, namely Papa Kisolokele in the health zone of Wangata with 1,098 people vaccinated, Maman wa Elikya in the health zone of Mbandaka with 762 people vaccinated as well as Wendji-Secli in the Bolenge health zone with 468 people vaccinated. The average frequency per day is 100 people vaccinated “, he said.

He indicated that this campaign mobilized 200 service providers (clinicians, vaccinators, mobilizers, data manager team leader, health workers, guards, cold chain assistant, nurse in charge of pregnancy, others, due to 26 per site on the seven places initially planned for the three health zones of the city of Mbandaka.

This campaign took place within the framework of the management unit of the UG-PDSS health system development project funded by the World Bank, said Dr. Zéphirin Mossoko.

About 45,000 people were targeted for this prophylactic vaccination campaign against Ebola virus disease in Mbandaka, prophylactic vaccination is a very effective strategy for the prevention of EVD. The DRC has so far experienced fifteen episodes of the Ebola virus disease since its declaration in 1976, including three episodes in the province of Equateur.
