Over 150 NYU Students Arrested in Anti-Israel Protest: Tensions Rise at One Police Plaza

In a night marked by tension and protest, more than 150 New York University (NYU) students were arrested during an anti-Israel demonstration on Monday night. Protesters marched to One Police Plaza, the headquarters of the NYPD.

Pictures from the protest show protesters holding bright lights above their heads as they march, while others wave flags, beat drums and chant “Gaza.” NYPD officers in riot gear were also seen monitoring protesters who chanted, “We will liberate Palestine, in our lives.”

According to PIX 11 reports, as of late Monday, more than 150 protesters were arrested when the NYU camp was broken up. For their part, other sources told the New York Post that when the number reached 134, the arrest processing system went down, slowing the processing of all detainees.

An NYU spokesperson said “unruly, disruptive and antagonistic” protesters filled Gould Plaza, prompting the university to send a written request to the NYPD for officers to intervene, PIX 11 noted.

Activists wanted NYU to divest from gun manufacturers and end the school’s relationship with Tel Aviv University. According to reports, Staff from the city’s university joined the show.

Other videos showed dozens of NYU professors linking arms to prevent police from entering the student encampment.

The NYU demonstrations come amid a wave of protests across the city and the country, with university campuses becoming hotspots of pro-Palestinian protests since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7 following terrorist attacks by the Islamist group.

Last week, more than 100 people were arrested at Columbia Universityand at Yale University about 50 protesters were arrested.
