Severe bad weather is hitting Lombardy today, especially the northern half of the region. Sunday started badly with the tornado that caused damage to Gallarate and continued with intense phenomena. At lunchtime, heavy rains resulted landslides and floods in the provinces of Sondrio and Lecco and in the afternoon the instability flared up further.

Strong thunderstorms hit the whole north of the region, from the province of Varese to that of Bergamo, with strong winds, intense hail e storms. The greatest rainfall accumulations in the Bergamo and Como areas. At 6:10 pm, the following were recorded: 104mm a Valmorea, 92mm in San Salvatore di Malnate, 90mm ad Albiolo, 87mm in Careggiola di Lurago d’Erba, 81mm in Como, Moltrasio, 80mm a Rota d’Imagna, 74mm in Alzate Brianza, 73mm a Monguzzo, 72mm in Olginate, Vedano Olona, 70mm a Brunate San Maurizio, 69mm a Merone, 62mm in Cantù, 55mm in Berbenno.

In the Bergamo, a violent one hailstorm it affected the Seriana, Brembana and Imagna valleys. The hail covered the streets and ruined the gardens, as shown by the photos in the sliding gallery above. The Fire Brigade was involved in about thirty interventions throughout the province, especially concentrated in the valleys, to felled trees, boulders on the roads, flooding; on the other hand, there are no reports of damage to homes or injured people. In San Pellegrino, the former state road flooded right in front of the headquarters of the mineral water company of the same name.

More damage due to bad weather in Gallarate. In the afternoon, the roof of an industrial building was blown up by the wind and crashed into some cars. Dozens of phone calls to the emergency number for flooding and damage caused by the wind. The provincial command of the Varese Fire Brigade has been at work since late morning today to respond to requests for help.
