Over 100,000 confirmed cases in New York

There are now more than 100,000 confirmed infections with the coronavirus in the US state of New York. The number of deaths rose by 562 to almost 3,000 within one day, Governor Andrew Cuomo told journalists yesterday.

The east coast state and the metropolis of the same name are currently worst hit by the coronavirus epidemic. Almost 15,000 patients are currently being treated in the state’s hospitals for the lung disease Covid-19, almost 4,000 of them in intensive care units, said Cuomo.

The governor once again asked for more help from other parts of the country that are currently not so badly affected by the virus. New York is currently “the spearhead” and needs help. As soon as the situation calms down, New York will help other harder-hit parts of the country, Cuomo promised. He emphasized: “Mutual help is the only solution.”

New Yorkers are supposed to wear face masks

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio meanwhile urged the population of the metropolis to wear face masks. “We advise New Yorkers to cover their face when they go out and will be around other people,” said de Blasio at a press conference. “It can be a scarf, it can be something you do yourself, it can be a scarf.”

Masks used by nurses and doctors, for example, should not be used because they would be needed more urgently elsewhere. There are new – “imperfect” – indications that wearing a face mask can protect others from possible infection, said de Blasio in support of the statement. “That means, when you put on your mouthguard, you protect everyone else.”
