Over 100 million Nintendo Switch – more than the Wii

Nintendo has sold 103.54 million switches since its debut on the market in 2017, and thus surpasses the company’s former bestseller Wii.

The Nintendo Switch has been a great success for the Japanese game maker, with 103.54 million units sold, the console being the fastest to reach over 100 million units sold.

Nintendo expects to sell a total of 23 million Switches during the fiscal year ending in March, which is a decrease of 21 percent compared to the previous year. The loss is due to the global problems with semiconductors and shipping, which they also believe will continue.

For Nintendo, only the handheld original Gameboy and Nintendo DS sold better. The best-selling gaming console ever is Sony’s Playstation 2 with over 155 million units sold.

“Switch is right in the middle of its life cycle and starts the year with good momentum. Switch is ready to break a pattern from our previous consoles, where the speed weakens during its sixth year on the market and instead grow further “, says Nintendo’s chairman Shuntaro Furukawa after the quarterly report, according to Bloomberg.

He also raised the company’s profit forecast by 40 million yen to 560 million yen, after software sales in particular exceeded expectations with a new Pokemon title as the big sales success.

The console manufacturers have had a hard time during the pandemic as the lack of semiconductors has hit the industry that competes with other electronics and the car manufacturers extra hard on the shortage.

Nintendo’s latest OLED Switch version has been difficult to obtain. Sony has had to lower its sales forecast for Playstation 5 by more than three million units. Microsoft’s latest Xbox version is also expected to suffer from major delivery issues.
