The Washington Capitals superstar led his team to a 4-3 win over Florida on Friday with his 28th career hat-trick. The 36-year-old Russian scored the first of his three goals in the power play, which was the 274th time he was outnumbered, with just one goal missing from legend Dave Andreychuk’s all-time league power play record.
Ovetschkin would have surpassed this mark if his tried and tested assistants Nicklas Bäckström and TJ Oshie had not missed much of the season due to injuries. Only four of his 18 goals (in 21 games) have been made in the power play so far.
