Outrage in Razgrad: Villagers Rally to Save Pregnant Mare from Euthanasia

The Montana village of Razgrad stands up in defense of a pregnant mare that will be euthanized because of a positive test for an infectious disease. People say that the animal does not have any symptoms. The strange thing is that if there is a finding of such a disease, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency announces it on its website. However, there is no information there, and at the same time euthanasia of the mare is planned.

About two weeks ago, a veterinarian at ODHC-Montana began collecting blood samples from the horses for testing.
Rumen Radkov is the owner of one such animal, but he is not a farmer and keeps it as a pet.

The Preslava mare is thoroughbred, he paid BGN 12,000 for her a little more than half a year ago. The mare is pregnant with only 4-5 months to term, but now Rumen has to say goodbye to her because the lab sample is positive for infectious anemia, which is contagious to horses and is carried by the flies that live around these animals.

Other owners with samples taken two weeks ago still have no results.

However, Rumen’s mare will be euthanized tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. showing no symptoms of the disease – she is lively, has no fever, is eating well and looks impressive.

The people of the village and with the support of hundreds of others from the country vowed that they would block the road to Rumen’s property with carts, cars and whatever else they could and would not allow the BABH doctor to euthanize the animal. According to Rumen, people from all over the country will come to the village tomorrow.
