SV Waldhof Mannheim is still waiting for their first away win of the season. In Osnabrück, the team played outnumbered for a long time and lost significantly.
The Mannheim team lost against VfL Osnabrück 0:5 (0:3). Before the break Kleinhansl, Riedel (own goal) and Simakala scored for the hosts. Mannheim’s Riedel saw the yellow-red card shortly before the half-time whistle. In round two, Higl and Heider were up. Waldhof have managed just one point from five games abroad, but remain sixth until at least Sunday’s games. The gap to third-placed SC Freiburg II is two points. Osnabrück is tenth.
Mannheim initially under pressure in Osnabrück
VfL Osnabrück determined the starting stage. Less than 20 seconds had gone by when Mannheim goalkeeper Behrens had to save a low shot from Higl. About a minute later, Osnabrück’s Simakala fired a free shot from close range, but shot well over the goal. Lucky for Mannheim not to fall behind anytime soon.
The Waldhof is also becoming dangerous
After this phase of pressure from the hosts, Waldhof also made their way into the game. Kother got Mannheim’s first chance in the eighth minute when he came on from the right and shot with his left foot. Boldly in goal, the hosts saved the shot. After 19 minutes, a deflected shot from Schnatterer flew just over the Osnabrück goal. In this phase of the game both teams had chances to score and the game was even.
Osnabrück scores three times before the break, Riedel sees yellow and red
As at the beginning of the game, on the half hour Higl tries a shot from distance. Behrens was there again with a strong parade. In the 35th minute, however, the Mannheim goalkeeper had no chance. Higl went back on for Kleinhansl, who hit the bottom left corner from about 20 meters to give Osnabrück the lead. Kleinhansl and Higl were also involved in the 2-0 which came three minutes later (38′). Kleinhansl’s cross headed Higl into the bottom left corner, Behrens fought back strongly and defended the ball against the post, from where it leapt into Mannheim defender Riedel and rolled into the goal. It was a used day for Riedel. Shortly after he saw a yellow-red card for a hand ball in the penalty area, and Simakala converted the penalty to make it 3-0 (45+1).
Increased storms over Osnabrück, Higl and Heider
Due to a thunderstorm in Osnabrück, the second half had to start late. When the game restarted, the Mannheim team immediately conceded the next goal. Higl scores the 4:0 (50′) with the first dangerous move by inserting a cross from Niemann. Osnabrück created more chances, but goalkeeper Behrens, Mannheim’s strongest player, kept saving. He got lucky after just under 70 minutes when Traoré hit the right post. Behrens then had no chance against Heider’s shot into the top left corner. The 5:0 goal (84th) marked the end of the game.
