Outlook on the New York (Corona) fashion week

Despite some live shows, Fashion Week in the Big Apple will look very different than before.

New York, London, Milan and Paris. The four-man team of the fashion capitals has to contend with some challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic. Previously, live shows with a large audience and a varied supporting program with after-show parties and co. Were the rules, but the reality is now completely different. Rather, many brands will rely on hybrid models with a strong digital focus, as a look at New York Fashion Week, which starts on September 13, shows.

What will change? On the one hand, it will only take place on four days instead of the previous six days. On the other hand, the CFDA Fashion Awards, which have been postponed from June to September, will also be presented this time during the fashion week.

The start will be made by designer Jason Wu, who will show his spring / summer collection 2021 on the roof of the Spring Studios in front of a small audience, including a live stream. Tom Ford will conclude by publishing photos of his collection.

Who will be there and who will not

Despite the shortened show schedule, many designers will use the opportunity to present their fashion. For example Badgley Mischka, Carolina Herrera, Christian Siriano, Marchesa, Rebecca Mnkoff and Dennis Basso. Many fashion designers have alternative plans, including Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Proenza Schouler, Tory Burch and Prabal Gurung.

Michael Kors will show his collection on October 15th in the form of a digital experimental stream on his social media channels. Prabal Grung will only show its fashion in a private setting for customers and the press. And Tory Burch will also publish a digital lookbook separately.

Outdoor and with 50 guests

Some shows will still take place live, including those by Jason Wu but also Rebecca Minkoff. However, these will take place outdoors and no more than 50 people will sit in the audience in order to comply with the safety guidelines of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Around 60 designers will take advantage of the opportunity to show their collections in digital form, for example via lookbooks, videos and films, on the Runway 360 platform. This was launched by the American moderator The Council of Fashion Designers of America. The platform will also offer the option of virtual press conferences and e-commerce integration.
