The flight bans were lifted because a quarantine obligation has been introduced: travelers from areas with a very high risk must be quarantined for ten days, or on the fifth day after arrival, test negative for corona. But it soon became apparent that security regions were uncertain about the enforcement and control of this stay-at-home requirement. The House therefore asked the cabinet to consider reintroducing flight bans for countries such as India, where worrying variants of the virus were circulating.
De Jonge takes four measures in response to the motion. In addition to the possible stricter control, the cabinet will map out for which travelers the flight ban actually affects. The European Union still has an entry ban for a very large number of countries. It also looks at how other EU countries deal with flight bans. The RIVM will, as usual, also assess the flight bans.

Due to concerns about a new corona variant, travelers who arrive in the Netherlands from the United Kingdom from Tuesday are required to be quarantined. That country, together with Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar and Nepal, is classified as a very high-risk area. The reason is the “worrying” Indian corona variant that is circulating in those countries. The Ministry of Health has decided to do this after advice from the RIVM.
Travelers coming from those countries must “possess a correct and fully completed quarantine declaration.” Travelers without such a statement can be fined 95 euros. People who do not comply with the stay-at-home obligation risk a fine of 339 euros. The quarantine obligation applies for ten days, unless the traveler tests negative for the coronavirus on day five.
A quarantine obligation already applies to travelers to India itself, where the so-called delta variant comes from.
