Outfit story: how that sulphurous dress almost ruined Charlize Theron’s career

In 2000, Charlize Theron was not yet an icon of Hollywood cinema. Like all actresses, the young woman runs the castings. For a few years, she takes on the supporting roles of wife or girlfriend. Worse yet, she was nominated in the “Worst Actress” category at the Razzie Awards for her role in “Sweet November”. In short, Charlize Theron has a hard time. So when the latter is invited to the 79th Academy Awards in 2007, the opportunity is too great not to take it. The idea? Make a very noticed appearance on the red carpet in order to arouse real enthusiasm (and catch the eye of the directors present at the evening). To do this, the actress will turn to the American stylist, Vera Wang.

A sulphurous dress …

Popular for her wedding dresses, Vera Wang is one of those designers very often sought after by celebrities. On the red carpets, it is not uncommon to see her creations parade. It is therefore no great surprise that Charlize Theron opted for an outfit from the American house. For the occasion, the New York designer has imagined a piece inspired by the 1930s. At the front, the dress is quite classic. The only extravagance: its orange color. But at the rear, that’s another observation. The piece stands out thanks to its sublime backless revealing the fall of the back of the actress. A daring piece upgraded by a slight train. A clever mix between the right dose of sexyness and refinement. But unfortunately, the opinions of the small Hollywood world were not unanimous.

… with serious consequences

Many actresses bet on the glamor card during prestigious ceremonies. We remember in particular the transparent jumpsuit of Bella Hadid at the Met Gala, the conical bra of Madonna at the Cannes Film Festival or the Yves Saint Laurent dress by Laetitia Casta at the César. In short, the sulphurous piece is a classic very often criticized, but never forgotten. And this is the whole problem for Charlize Theron. Asked by the magazine “Baltimore Sun”, the star said she wanted to forget this Vera Wang dress forever. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve auditioned for a role so that in the end my agent comes to me and says, ‘Listen, Charlize, they saw you in the orange dress and they don’t think that you can do it, ”she explained. Very violent refusals for the young woman who admits not having lived very well after the ceremony. As if a piece of fabric could determine the talent of an actress. We think we are dreaming!
