In a new report, the National Institute of Public Health writes that there is an increased risk that the Indian variant will spread in Norway.

NIPH now believes that there is a medium to high risk that this variant will spread in Norway.

Among the findings of the Indian variant in Norway, FHI writes about an outbreak of infection at a quarantine hotel in Viken in April / May.

Infection in workplaces and schools

According to FHI, no infection was detected among travelers, and the outbreak was handled by the municipality. But a consequence of the outbreak among the employees is that there is now a hidden spread of infection in Oslo and Viken.

FHI states that the virus has spread to other places in Oslo and Viken after the outbreak at the quarantine hotel.

“So far, 18 viruses from this cluster have been completely sequenced, and almost identical viruses have been detected. There are several known cases in the cluster, so the actual number of cases is probably over 50. Since there has been infection in workplaces and schools, more cases may arise, “writes FHI.

Whole genome sequencing means looking for the virus’ genetic code to examine how it is structured. A change in this code may indicate a mutation.

Indian variant has taken hold in England

A report from the British Institute of Public Health estimates that 75 percent of all corona infections in England are now due to the Indian variant.

This is a clear indication that it is far more contagious than the British virus variant, which is the dominant one otherwise – also in Norway.

This is substantiated in the report from Public Health England also by how many close contacts one infected person transmits further. Then it is clear that people who have been infected by the Indian variant, infect more than those who have had the British.
