Stomach flu has broken out in the cardiology department at the Flevo Hospital in Almere. That is why no new patients are admitted to the nursing ward of this department.

The new patients will be temporarily housed in other departments, the hospital reports.

Patients infected with norovirus are cared for in separate rooms. The hospital has introduced extra cleaning rounds and is paying more attention to hand washing.

Visitors are requested to wash their hands after their visit and leave the hospital immediately. Employees with complaints must stay at home until they have been free of complaints for 24 hours.

The norovirus causes inflammation of the intestines and is very contagious. The disease is called stomach flu. The virus is found in the feces and vomit of someone who carries the virus.

In most cases, the complaints disappear after one to four days. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
