It has now become known that the bluetongue virus found in the Netherlands is serotype 3. Serotype 3 has not previously been identified in our country. No established vaccine is yet available for this serotype. Unfortunately, vaccinations for other serotypes do not lead to the build-up of antibodies against this serotype.

Update on the bluetongue virus in the Netherlands
More information is expected soon from the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and the NVWA about the spread of the virus in the Netherlands, (export) restrictions and guidelines. Until then, the advice remains to exercise as much restraint as possible with the transport of live animals and living products, to provide stables with insect-resistant mesh and to be alert to abnormal behavior or any clinical symptoms in sheep and other ruminants.

Bluetongue is back in the Netherlands
The bluetongue virus has been detected on four sheep farms in the Netherlands. These are the first cases of bluetongue since 2009. This means that the EU-free status that the Netherlands had obtained since 2012 will lapse. The bluetongue virus can be transmitted to cattle. Although this usually presents a mild clinical picture, it is still important to prevent infection.
