According to experts, the outbreak of monkeypox cannot be compared to the beginning of the corona pandemic. For communication, however, the mistakes from back then threaten, comments Katja Bauer.

So now monkey pox. It’s a somewhat oppressive feeling of deja vu that comes over you at the news of the outbreak of this viral disease. The memory of the first days of the corona pandemic is waking up. At the moment, experts are pointing out that neither the outbreak nor the two diseases are comparable. This is important.

Contradictory statements

Equally important – and painful – is the realization that comparisons with the situation of two years ago are nevertheless inevitable. Because again the communication is polyphonic and sometimes contradictory. While one authority only speaks of infection with close physical contact, the other reports that the virus could also be transmitted through the air we breathe. And while the World Health Organization warns that the routes of infection must be traced back, it is clear that nothing has changed structurally in this problem in Germany. Experts have long said the age of pandemics has arrived. Corona has shown how urgently the public health system needs to be upgraded.
