Portuguese authorities said they had identified five rare cases of monkeypox infection and Spanish health services were testing eight potential cases after Britain alerted Europe to the virus.
“Five Portuguese patients, out of 20 suspected cases, are all stable. They are all male and they all live in the Lisbon region and the Tagus Valley,” the Portuguese health authority was quoted as saying. CBCWednesday (18/5/2022).
Spain’s Ministry of Health said in a statement that none of the eight suspected cases had been confirmed.
European Health Authorities are monitoring every outbreak of the disease since Britain reported its first case of monkeypox on May 7 and has since found six more cases.
Monkeypox or monkeypox is a rare viral infection that is similar to human smallpox, although it is milder. The disease was first recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the 1970s. The number of cases in West Africa has increased in the last decade.
Symptoms include fever, headache, and a skin rash that starts on the face and spreads over the body.

The disease is not highly contagious between humans, Spanish health authorities say, and most infected people recover within a few weeks, although severe cases have been reported.
