(CNN) Three people have died and three have been hospitalized after an outbreak of Listeria poisoning among customers who drank milkshakes at a restaurant in Tacoma, Washington. state health officials said.

An investigation found that improper cleaning of the ice cream machine at the store had caused food poisoning. Listeria can have effects up to 70 days after ingestion. The machine in question was in use until the 7th of this month.

Six were hospitalized between 27 February and 22 July. As a result of analyzing the genes of pathogenic bacteria detected in milkshakes, it was found that food poisoning was caused by the same strain of Listeria monocytogenes.

Two of the three who recovered said they felt sick after drinking milkshakes at the same Tacoma restaurant.

Infection with Listeria can cause fever, muscle pain, and other symptoms such as diarrhea.

State officials are urging customers who develop listeria symptoms after eating or drinking at the Tacoma store between May 29 and August 7 to seek medical attention.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are an estimated 1,600 cases of Listeria-related food poisoning each year in the United States, resulting in about 260 deaths.

Elderly people, pregnant women, infants, and adults with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable.
