Hungarian authorities have announced that they have detected an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, type H5N1, at a pheasant farm in the east of the country, in the town of Abádszalók, 140 kilometers away from Oradea.
The 7,000 pheasants on the farm will be killed, stated the National Office for Food Chain Safety in the neighboring country.
The breeder of the birds suspected that they had contracted bird flu when he saw that the birds had lost their appetite, showed symptoms of specific nervous system disorders and were dying on their heads. The suspicions were confirmed by the authorities, who detected the H5N1 virus.
In addition to the liquidation of the poultry stock on the farm, the Hungarian specialists established a 3 km protection zone around the farm and a surveillance zone within a 10 km radius.
Bird flu illnesses are increasingly common in Hungary, and authorities are advising poultry farmers to take measures to protect them, including by raising them indoors.
H5N1 bird flu was also confirmed this week at a duck farm in France, birds that had previously been vaccinated against this virus.
Bird flu normally starts to appear in the fall, with the virus being carried by migrating wild birds coming from Asia to Europe.
