The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that seven people have died from an outbreak of fungal meningitis linked to cosmetic procedures at two clinics in Mexico.
PEOPLE reported, the Mexican Ministry of Health and state and local health departments revealed that the outbreak was first reported in May, involving patients undergoing procedures under epidural anesthesia at the Riverside Surgical Center or Clinica K-3 clinic.
The agency stated that there were 161 people under investigation, 15 suspected cases, 10 probable cases and nine confirmed cases of fungal meningitis.

Fungal meningitis is a rare, life-threatening fungal infection that causes swelling of the areas around the brain and spinal cord, according to the CDC. People can become infected during medical procedures if infection control protocols are not followed.
Symptoms of fungal meningitis include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light and confusion. While it can take weeks for symptoms to develop and may be mild at first, they can quickly become severe and life-threatening.
The current outbreak is thought to be caused by a relatively rare organism, Fusarium solani, which has been isolated from several patients.
Jose Campo Maldonado, an infectious disease specialist at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas, noticed that the infected patients had problems with the blood vessels in the brain.
“Almost all the patients we see in the hospital have some sort of neurovascular complication. This includes problems such as spasms in the arteries in the brain or infection in the walls of the blood vessels themselves, known as mycotic aneurysms,” said Jose.
