This confirms board chairman Kina Koster of care group Cicero, which includes Emmastaete, to 1Limburg.
British variant
The seventeen residents who became infected belonged to the same community. The British variant of the coronavirus has been diagnosed in two residents. This is probably also the case with the other residents.
In other departments of Emmastaete, another four residents were tested positive for the corona virus. Seventeen employees also appeared to have the virus among their members.
Source of infection unknown
It remains a guess as to the cause, says Koster. “There is a lot of confusion in the nursing home. You look at the person who has the first complaints, but that does not guarantee that it is also the source of infection.”
Vaccination
The residents had already received their first vaccination. They were vaccinated two weeks ago at the end of January. Koster: “No one showed any symptoms at that time. Residents only started to develop symptoms later. They were stiff and cold. The symptoms persisted for so long that it could no longer be a side effect of the vaccine. The location manager then decided to contact the residents. have it tested. “
Koster is very pleased that the location manager has engaged the GGD for an investigation. “The outbreak was so big and happened so quickly, that couldn’t be right. Now it appears that we are dealing with the British variant.”
Corona measures not relaxed
After the first vaccination, people are never completely immune, says Koster. “We have therefore not relaxed all corona measures.” Those who are now infected can only get their second shot later, according to Koster. That was on the agenda for two weeks from now. There are now two weeks delay on top of that.
Visit
The nursing home in Brunssum is not cut off from the outside world. The residents can decide for themselves whether they want to receive visitors. In doing so, all safety measures must be taken into account. “You don’t want to make these people lonely. We locked up for three months last year. That caused a lot of human suffering and we don’t want to experience that again”, says Koster.
Emmastaete was built on the site of the former state mine Emma and was opened in 2006. Almost 80 elderly people live in the nursing home.
